Yes, it is true that results are everything, but…

Should we just keep striving focusing only on the results?

Should sports stars only play focusing on winning the game no matter what?

Should kids only study for exams focusing on the results?

Should teachers only teach focusing on results?

Should sales team only force sell to get the numbers?

Here’s my take on this. Results are indeed a powerful motivation, but using that as the main driver? I doubt…

If that were the case, Customer service would rock, people would be extremely motivated to work, no calling in sick, innovation would be at its peak. Clearly, this is not what we see in most places. While we see glimpses of great service, it definitely does not come from “Results” as a motivator.

This example might make newsense!

You have a seed, pot, sand and water. You sow the seed, give it the necessary amount of water, soil, sunlight. Keep doing this and the seed has no choice but to grow. Continue doing this, and the plant has no choice but to flower! If you need a beautiful garden, then you work on the seeds, soil, conditions and most importantly, getting your hands dirty.

If you are still striving on the results as the primary driver, then it’s time to stop.

Strive for the best practices - remove the long processes or find a work around, strive for the best service you can give, the best contribution you can make as an employee, the best you can guide yourself and your team. There are days and times, you will be off track, acknowledge that, let your team know. Remember - Vulnerability is the stepping stone to authenticity. Every one is human.

The best way to bring a team DOWN is to beat them UP

Again, remember the golden rules:

  • Activity does not mean accomplishment

  • We work with people and not for people

  • We are in an era of collaboration and not just competition

As you wake up, remind yourself that Work can be challenging, but Doing that work should not be!

Break the shackles that are holding you back, and go all out and do what you can, even if it is just for 1 min, 2 mins, 10 mins. The point is to get started.
